University of Calgary 50th anniversary learning space

A new space will be opening this year at the University of Calgary for the 50th anniversary. The former Nickle Arts Museum will re-open as a 4,000 square metre, 2 storey building known as the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning. The building is due to open in early 2016 for university students and the faculty.

The Calgary Film Centre

The Calgary Film Centre is due to be operational early this year, the centre first broke ground in October 2014. The 50,000 square feet centre includes 20,000 square feet of warehouse area and for $1 invested in television or film, the ROI will be $6, according to Calgary Economic Development.

17th Avenue bus only lanes

This year bus only lanes are coming to Calgary between Hulbalta Road and 26th Street S.E. The redevelopment of 17th Avenue S.E. means that bus lanes are to be installed in the centre of the road. The sidewalks are to be widened and better lighting added to the new Transitway Project.

Quarry Park Recreation Facility

The new The Quarry Park Recreation Facility will be arriving this year in Southeast Calgary at 108 Quarry Park road S.E. Residents of Riverbend, Douglasdale/Glen, Ogden and Quarry Park will be able to use the park which includes 25 metre swimming pool with 6 lanes, a fitness centre, hot tubs, a running track and a Calgary Public Library with full service. The facility is just under 100,000 square feet.

 

The Great Plains Recreation Facility

Located on 5749 76 Avenue S.E., The Great Plains Recreation Facility is due to open this year and will include a fitness centre, to ice rinks, a pro shop, spectator seating and skate sharpening.

Zoo Bridge construction starts

A new bridge at 12th Street S.E. starts this year with a completion date in 2017. The new bridge replaces the 100 year old bridge and will be able to withstand a rare events like a 1 in 200 year flood.

CrossIron Mills’s food court

This spring a new and improved food court will be opening at CrossIron Mills, the capacity will be 1,300. The refurbishment will be completed in 2017 with new retailers where the old food court was.

The National Music Centre

The eagerly anticipated The National Music Centre is due to partly open this spring along 9th Avenue S.E. Construction started in 2006, the buildings unusual design has been inspired by King Eddy and the geography of Western Canada.

45th Juno Awards

From March 28th to April 3rd, the 45th Juno Awards will be in town and the first artist to be booked is Alessia Cara, the Canadian singer. All over Calgary there will be events taking place, both free and ticketed. Party time in Calgary!

Mill Street Brewery

The Costigan House, also known as The Republik and Tequila Nightclub previously will be opening up as the Mill Street Brewery. The building will look how it did in the 1920’s complete with the original bay window projections, gables and turned wood finials. There will be brewery in the building and a meeting area that looks like a beer hall, upstairs a section will tell the history of the brewed beer.

Indoor lacrosse area

In the spring the Calgary Winter Lacrosse Association will open the first indoor lacrosse in the city, the facility has been 12 years in the making. The Glenmore Trail and Ogden facility will be the size of about 4 soccer pitches.

Danceworks to open in April

The Decidedly Jazz Danceworks centre will opening in April this year and covers 38,000 square feet at 12th Avenue S.E. and Centre Street. The new centre will have seven dance studios and one of them will be for community use. A funky design with twisting windows on the studios.

New Calgary International Terminal

After a few delays the new Calgary International Terminal will open in the fall of this year. The terminal will be using the latest call to gate system and will feature 70 retailers including Cococo Chocolatiers and a Vin Room.

New commuter pilot project

The Calgary Regional Partnership will be launching a new commuter bus service to Calgary from Nanton, Okotoks, Black Diamond or Turner Valley and High River. The bus will connect with the LRT station at Somerset/Bridlewood.

An accessible healthy food centre

A new centre for healthy food is scheduled for opening in the last quarter of this year, the exact location has not been decided yet. Community Food Centres Canada and The Alex partnered in 2014 to work on the first CFC (Community Food Centre) in Calgary. The project will have a kitchen, greenhouse or garden and a dining room. The building will be designed by RAD Architecture and will have 5,000 square feet of space.

The Rec Room at Deerfoot City

The Rec Room is due to open in December this year in Deerfoot City and will the 2nd Rec Room in Canada after Edmonton in spring this year. Cineplex Entertainment is constructing a new 50,000 square foot, two storey building for a gathering place for children and adults. The Rec Room will feature games, restaurants, a bar, bocce ball courts and a live performance area. The Deerfoot City mall will be demolished this year and replaced with the High Street, works start in the spring.

cSpace, co-working area

cSpace will be a new co-working area in the city and will be occupying a 47,500 square feet area for performances and artistic creation. The space will feature co-working space, studio space, a rehearsal area, Montessori childcare and a theatre. The space will open in October 2016.
